Kurdistan’s new Gene Bank could become a strategic asset for food security

The Kurdistan Region has opened its first agricultural gene bank in Sulaymaniyah, creating a scientific and strategic institution designed to preserve the Region’s plant diversity while supporting the future development of agriculture in Kurdistan and Iraq.
Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani described the facility as one of the most important national projects in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. His assessment reflects the fact that the project is about far more than storing seeds. At a time when climate change, water scarcity, environmental degradation and changing agricultural patterns are placing increasing pressure on food systems, preserving indigenous plant varieties can become an important component of long-term national resilience.
Speaking after the inauguration, Talabani said the agricultural gene bank would help protect plant species in Kurdistan and the wider region from extinction. He also argued that the facility could support the development of a new generation of agricultural products and create hundreds of employment opportunities.
That combination—conservation, research, agricultural innovation and employment—gives the project significance beyond its physical location in Sulaymaniyah.
Preserving Kurdistan’s Agricultural Heritage
The agricultural history of Kurdistan is closely connected to the diversity of its landscapes. Mountainous areas, plains, valleys and different climatic zones have historically supported a wide range of crops and locally adapted plant varieties.
Some of those varieties, however, face increasing pressure.
Changes in farming practices, water availability, climate conditions, market preferences and the replacement of traditional varieties with commercially dominant crops can gradually reduce agricultural biodiversity. Once a native variety disappears, recovering it can become extremely difficult or even impossible.
A gene bank provides a mechanism to prevent that loss.
By collecting, documenting, preserving and studying seeds, the new facility can create a form of agricultural archive for Kurdistan and Iraq. The value of such an archive may not always be immediately visible, but its importance becomes much greater when environmental or economic conditions change.
A seed that has little commercial value today could become highly valuable tomorrow if it possesses characteristics such as drought tolerance, resistance to disease or the ability to grow under changing climatic conditions. This makes agricultural biodiversity a strategic resource.
Food Security Is Becoming a National Security Issue
The establishment of the gene bank comes at a time when food security is increasingly linked to national security.
Kurdistan and Iraq face significant agricultural challenges, including water shortages, declining water availability, rising temperatures and increasing dependence on imported food products. These pressures make agricultural productivity and resilience increasingly important to economic and political stability.
A gene bank cannot solve those problems by itself.
But it can provide one of the scientific foundations necessary to address them.
Preserving indigenous seeds means maintaining access to genetic characteristics that may be needed to develop crops better suited to future environmental conditions. Scientists can study these varieties, identify useful characteristics and potentially use them in breeding programs designed for local conditions.
The strategic value therefore lies not simply in preservation but in future optionality. A country that preserves its agricultural genetic resources retains more choices when its environmental and economic circumstances change.
A Scientific Institution, Not Simply a Seed Warehouse
The Sulaymaniyah facility is intended to function as a scientific centre for Iraq's agricultural biodiversity.
Its mission includes collecting, preserving and studying seeds and plant diversity while maintaining the authenticity of native species. It is also expected to support their development and advance agricultural research.
That creates opportunities for cooperation between universities, research institutions and government agencies.
The connection between the gene bank and academic institutions could prove particularly important. Universities can contribute scientific expertise in genetics, agriculture, biotechnology and environmental research, while government institutions can translate research findings into agricultural policy and practical programs for farmers.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources can also use the institution as a platform for developing evidence-based agricultural strategies.
If these relationships are properly institutionalized, the gene bank could become more than a storage facility. It could evolve into a national research hub connecting agricultural conservation with innovation.
The International Dimension
The project was funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the European Union, with support from institutions within both the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government of Iraq.
That international involvement is significant.
Agricultural biodiversity does not respect political boundaries. Many plant varieties and ecosystems extend across the Kurdistan Region and neighboring parts of Iraq and the wider Middle East. A scientific institution capable of preserving and studying this diversity could therefore become a platform for regional research cooperation.
The partnership also demonstrates how international organizations can contribute to long-term institutional capacity rather than simply emergency humanitarian assistance.
The project covers approximately 100 dunams, providing a substantial physical base for its activities.
Its long-term success, however, will depend less on the size of the land than on the quality of its scientific infrastructure, databases, preservation standards and research partnerships.
From Preservation to Agricultural Innovation
The most important opportunity may lie in connecting the gene bank with Kurdistan's emerging agricultural economy.
The Region has been attempting to expand domestic agricultural production and reduce dependence on imports. Farmers are experimenting with new crops and varieties, while investment in agriculture is gradually becoming more commercially attractive.
The gene bank can complement this process.
Instead of treating agricultural biodiversity as something that belongs exclusively to the past, researchers can use it to develop the agriculture of the future. Indigenous varieties may contain characteristics that can be incorporated into new crops capable of performing better under local conditions.
This could be particularly important for water-intensive agriculture.
As water availability becomes increasingly uncertain, varieties that can survive with less water may become economically valuable. Likewise, crops capable of tolerating heat, salinity or changing soil conditions could become essential to maintaining agricultural production.
The genetic material preserved today could therefore become part of Kurdistan's response to tomorrow's climate challenges.
Creating Jobs and Knowledge
Talabani also highlighted the project's potential to create hundreds of jobs.
That potential should be understood broadly.
A modern agricultural gene bank requires scientists, laboratory specialists, agricultural researchers, technicians, database managers, field workers and administrative staff. It can also generate indirect employment through partnerships with universities, agricultural businesses, farmers and research organizations.
More importantly, it can help develop a knowledge-based agricultural sector.
Kurdistan's economic diversification debate has often focused on energy, tourism, trade and private investment. Agriculture deserves equal attention as a sector where scientific knowledge can generate both economic and strategic value.
A successful gene bank could help shift agriculture from a predominantly traditional activity toward a more research-driven industry.
Sulaymaniyah as an Agricultural Research Hub
The location of the facility in Sulaymaniyah also offers an opportunity to strengthen the city's position as a centre of research and higher education.
The Kurdistan Region already possesses universities and research institutions with expertise relevant to agriculture, environmental studies and natural sciences. Linking those institutions directly to the gene bank could create a wider agricultural research ecosystem.
Students and researchers could conduct studies using preserved genetic material. Government agencies could commission research into crop resilience. Farmers could eventually benefit from improved varieties developed through scientific programs.
Such an ecosystem would make the investment significantly more valuable than the facility itself.
The real strategic asset would be the network of knowledge built around it.
The Next Challenge: Connecting Science With Farmers
The success of the gene bank should ultimately be measured by what happens beyond its walls.
Preserving seeds is the first step. Making that knowledge useful to farmers is the larger challenge.
Researchers will need to identify which varieties possess valuable characteristics, test them under local conditions and develop practical agricultural applications. Extension services will then need to communicate those findings to farmers.
The Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government can play an important role by creating programs that connect the gene bank with agricultural producers.
Farmers should not see the facility as a distant scientific institution. They should eventually be able to benefit directly from the knowledge and genetic resources it preserves.
That could create a cycle in which farmers contribute traditional varieties to the gene bank, researchers study them, new agricultural applications are developed and farmers then benefit from improved crops.
Such a model would transform conservation into economic development.
A Strategic Investment in Kurdistan’s Future
The inauguration of Sulaymaniyah's agricultural gene bank may initially appear to be a technical agricultural development. In reality, its significance is much broader.
It represents an investment in Kurdistan's agricultural memory, scientific capacity and future food security.
The Region cannot predict exactly what its farmers will need twenty or thirty years from now. But it can preserve the genetic resources that give future generations more options.
That is why Talabani's description of the project as a national initiative is significant.
A seed bank may not attract the same immediate attention as an oil project, a major infrastructure investment or a new industrial facility. Yet its strategic value can increase over time precisely because it protects resources that cannot easily be recreated once lost.
For Kurdistan, the challenge now is to ensure that the gene bank does not become merely a repository of seeds.
It should become a living scientific institution—one that connects agricultural heritage with biotechnology, universities with farmers, conservation with commercial production, and today's crops with tomorrow's climate realities.
If that vision is realized, Sulaymaniyah's new gene bank could become one of the Kurdistan Region's most important long-term investments in food security, agricultural innovation and economic resilience.
